LEONARDO e VIGEVANO

Leonardo’s Workshop. His Codices, Machines and Drawings

September 12, 2009 - June 13, 2010

For the first time in Italy, visitors are given the opportunity to browse the pages of Leonardo's most important codices - Codex Atlanticus, Codex on the Flight of Birds and Manuscript B - via large-screen video displays. But that's not all: visitors are in for a treat as Leonardo's drawings are brought to life through extraordinary and 3D animations that render them interactive and more immediately understandable.

Historically speaking, the reproduction of Manuscript B will go down as a hugely important operation: each of the manuscript's pages has been digitally restored and its original appearance recreated with utmost precision. The Codex on the Flight of Birds contains Leonardo's analysis of bird flight and even more fascinating is the inclusion of a draft design for a flying machine (with flying instructions!) that, 500 years on, has been discovered and reconstructed by Leonardo3 scholars.

Also exhibited are physical reconstructions of Leonardo's machines and inventions, like the full-scale (three metre) Mechanical Lion, built to prowl in front of the King of France and present him with lilies. Making its worldwide premiere is the Harpsichord-Viola, a keyboard instrument that emits the sound of a viola. Also debuting is the unprecedented reconstruction of the Mechanical Soldier, a true version of a 15th century robot. This exhibition is launched under the High Patronage of the Head of State.
